Now, the Supreme Court will consider whether the prosecutors’ interpretation of the law can be used against the rioters and whether the convictions already secured will stick. The charge at issue in the Supreme Court case stems from a law Congress enacted in response to a series of corporate accounting scandals, including the 2001 Enron debacle. The case before the Supreme Court involves only that last charge. All three defendants appealed to the Supreme Court, but the justices granted only Fischer’s case. In a filing last week at the Supreme Court in Trump’s immunity case, Smith argued the obstruction charge should stick against Trump even if Fischer wins.

This month's rout in smallcap stocks has erased the Russell 2000's sparkling first quarter gain, and the benchmark index for smaller shares could face further trouble ahead so long as interest rates are left unchanged. A hotter-than-expected March inflation report on Wednesday pushed investors on Wall Street to extend out expectations for the Federal Reserve's first interest rate cut to September from June, according to the CME Group's FedWatch tool . The Fed's last interest rate increase in the current cycle was in July, 2023. Baltimore’s regional economy has a lot going for it such as low unemployment and low inflation. That’s well below the national rate of 3.9% in February and ranks 43rd out of 389 regions across the country with more than one million residents. Low inflationThe US economy is still dealing with high inflation, but that’s not much of a problem for the Baltimore metro. Inflation in Baltimore slowed dramatically last year from April to June, falling to a 2.8% annual rise from April’s 5.3%. Like across the country, rising energy prices have recently pushed up overall inflation in the Baltimore metro.

But with Russian forces still inside the country and millions of Ukrainians displaced from their homes, fighting on the frontlines, or living overseas, there is no election in sight. Although Sunday is the day the constitution says Ukraine should be voting, it also does not allow it during wartime. He would have voted for Zelensky five years ago if he had had the chance and would vote for him now. Last August, President Zelensky was asked for his position in an interview on Ukrainian television and sounded sympathetic to holding a poll. As the United States Congress continues to dither over new military aid, elections in Ukraine became folded into the debate by some Republicans.

The owner of the ship that crashed into the Baltimore bridge faces a mountain of potential lawsuits. Experts say the owner will likely try to invoke an 1851 law to try to cap potential damages. The Limitation of Liability Act was successfully used by the Titanic owner after the 1912 sinking. "If they're fully successful, it will cap how much they have to pay in damages," Michael Sturley, an expert in maritime law and professor at the University of Texas at Austin's School of Law, told BI. However, I must say that the way things look at present, it seems unlikely that a limitation petition will be successful."

Ashlee Wiseman, a waitress at a Sizzler in Idaho Falls, Idaho, was 10 weeks pregnant when a nurse phoned with crushing news: a test of fetal DNA in her blood had found that her baby girl had trisomy 18, a catastrophic genetic abnormality, and was unlikely to survive. Devastated, she called her partner, Clint Risenmay, who was at work. “I’m like, ‘I’m not going to listen to them. And there has to be someone who can help.’”A social media search led her to Dr. John Carey, a professor emeritus of pediatrics at the University of Utah, who has devoted his life to helping families dealing with trisomy 18. Sumy region, Ukraine CNN —“Evacuation! Luhivka, in Ukraine’s northeastern Sumy region, lies just a few miles from the border with Russia. Workers inspect fortifications being built in Ukraine's Sumy region on March 16, 2024. Even though Russia’s leader might seem impervious to small military setbacks, his comments last week following the announcement of his poll victory suggest a possible further intention to force Ukraine’s border areas into submission. CNN —Ukraine says it hit two Russian naval vessels, along with a communications center and several other facilities belonging to the Black Sea Fleet, in a huge overnight attack on the Crimean port of Sevastopol. Ukraine said the vessels hit were two amphibious landing ships, the Yamal and the Azov. More than 20 Russian naval vessels have now been disabled or destroyed, a third of the entire fleet. Though Ukraine has virtually no navy of its own, technological innovation, audacity and Russian incompetence have given it the upper hand in much of the Black Sea. In October last year, satellite imagery indicated that Russia relocated some of its naval ships away from Sevastopol after a series of Ukrainian attacks.

These are accusations that the Justice Department leveled against a technology giant it accused of running an illegal monopoly. But they aren’t from this week’s antitrust lawsuit against Apple — they’re from the case the department brought against Microsoft in 1998. And federal prosecutors are explicitly connecting the Apple lawsuit to that earlier fight. “They’re really presenting this case as a successor to that: Microsoft 2.0,” said Gus Hurwitz, a senior fellow at the University of Pennsylvania Carey Law School. And it isn’t clear whether the Justice Department will be able to achieve here what it claims to have done by suing Microsoft.

Russian Telegram channels have showed other mobile election teams across the occupied territories, including some which appear to clearly show Russian soldiers accompanying election officials as they go house to house. Ukrainian officials say intimidation tactics like that are commonplace and are aimed at forcing people to give their vote to Putin. For their part, Russian-installed officials in the occupied territories reported several explosions close to polling stations on Saturday, at least some of which Ukraine appeared to acknowledge. Russia’s election officials have been posting updates on what they say is turnout in the various regions. Ukraine says Moscow will fabricate the final results and insists that the majority of people living under Russian occupation are choosing not to take part in the poll.

CNN —An awards ceremony curveball indeed: Emma Stone, winner of the Oscar for Best Actress for her performance in “Poor Things,” dealt with a sartorial snafu just moments before she took the stage to accept her trophy. “My dress is broken,” Stone appeared to mouth while en route to receive her Academy Award. “I think it happened during ‘I’m Just Ken,’” she explained, referencing Ryan Gosling’s performance of his song from the “Barbie” movie — and, presumably, some dance moves she’d indulged in (because who wouldn’t boogie down with Gosling should the opportunity present itself?). And perhaps most infamously, Jennifer Lawrence, who was on stage with Stone tonight (as one of the former Best Actress winners who introduced this year’s nominees), took a tumble when accepting her Oscar for Best Actress in 2013 due to the hemline on her cascading Dior Haute Couture gown. Lawrence, along with the other former winners, helped usher Stone off-stage.
